Frequently Asked Questions

Over the last seven years, SDC has won numerous awards for being one of the Top Dance Studios in New Jersey and throughout the Tri-State Region. We’ve compiled a list of common questions we have been asked by parents and students over the years regarding Synergy Dance Company for your convenience.

How do I become a member of Synergy Dance Company?

You must be selected for auditions into SDC by an instructor and approved by the Director and Company Teachers. Selections are made throughout the year based on attendance, technique, attitude and talent.  Auditions are typically held in May or June.  The minimum age for a SDC member is 5 years old. This would be our entry level, Petite Synergy Dancers! There is a $20 audition fee due on the day of auditions, cash or check only.  We also ask that each dancer fill out the audition form included in the audition packet. Though a teacher may see potential in a child, we cannot promise that he/she will be selected for the Company at the time of the audition. However, being selected for the audition means there is great potential in your child! Teachers will continue to nurture and ready them further for entry into the Company at a later date.

How long is the season?

The season begins with the Summer Intensive August 27-31.  Regular, weekly classes begin in early September and continue through mid-June.

When are the competitions?

At the beginning of the season, the Director will decide which regional competitions/conventions SDC will be attending. Careful consideration is given to which competitions we attend, and we only select high-caliber, reputable competitions. Dates for competitions will be published by the end of August. Competitions are on the weekends, usually beginning on Friday night and continuing through Saturday or Sunday. Our first regional competition is usually in February and, our final competition is in late April or early May. We do not know the exact times our dancers compete until a week before the event. As soon as we receive the schedule, it will be passed on to you. Since we know our competition dates months in advance, this allows you and your family time to adequately plan your schedules around competitions. Although we try to select regional competitions/conventions in the area, occasionally we may have to travel further than 1 hour to attend a competition/convention.

What is the Summer Intensive?

The Summer Intensive is a five-day camp in the Summer made up of classes taught by our PDS staff as well as by Guest Instructors/Choreographers. The Summer Intensive is the first time that SD Company members get a chance to bond and experience some amazing instruction as a team. These master classes give SDC some of the best dance education available on the East Coast! It is also the best opportunity for choreographers to see what the dancers can do. During this week, dancers will start to learn their new routines for the 2018-2019 season. The Summer Intensive is required for every Synergy Company Dancer.

When do the dances rehearse?

Group dances rehearse during their scheduled rehearsal classes. Solos, Duos, Trios and small groups are also rehearsed during the week when possible before or after class and sometimes on weekends. As we get closer to competition dates, some additional rehearsal time may be required on weekends.

Are there other dance opportunities for SDC Dancers?

Yes! We have master classes taught by talented guests throughout the season. Company dancers have the opportunity to attend conventions and learn from Teachers/Choreographers that work professionally in the dance industry. These conventions also offer scholarships and special awards to a few students. This is something all our dancers strive to attain every year!  At these conventions, the educators open the eyes of the dancers to show how the professional dance world works and the quick pace of learning choreography. This truly inspires and motivates the children and is an experience they will always remember, whether they choose to dance professionally or not. We have an exciting 2018-19 season planned!  We will be performing at Madison Square Garden and Lincoln Center during the 2018-2019 season.

What is the cost of the tuition and fees to be part of SDC?

  • Costs are comprised of class tuition, competition fees, costumes, appropriate shoes, accessories and make-up
  • All SDC Company Parents must be enrolled in the PDS Autopay Plan. We take the total cost and divide that into monthly payments.
  • All SDC dancers must purchase all required SDC apparel and costumes for class and performance.
  • The cost of SDC depends on the Company your child is in, as there are different class requirements for each Company. There is a built-in discount for SDC dancers. The more classes you take at PDS the less you pay per class.  For individual pricing for your child, please come into the Studio to tailor your personal schedule and for the determined pricing.

Please understand that there will be NO exceptions to these rules. In order to run our studio smoothly and efficiently, everyone must follow our policies and procedures.

Encouraging your child to become part of the Synergy Dance Company is not a decision to be taken lightly. It should be given careful consideration. This demands a major commitment from both the child and the parents. Synergy Dance Company is an amazing experience but, the parent and child must know and understand the dedication required to be part of the Company.

What is the refund policy?

If you decide that company is not right for your child at any point in the year, your tuition amount can be transferred to our recreational classes. We DO NOT give cash refunds. The credit will stay in your account and may extend to the following year if needed.

“People don’t remember me for how high my legs went, even though they went up very high, and how many pirouettes I did. They don’t remember me for that. They remember me and any other dancer because something touched them inside. It’s an indelible memory on the heart and in the mind.” – Judith Jamison
